Indie Designer Angela Johnson

DIYthing: I see your work described as avante garde. Are labels meaningful anymore?
Angela: Well, I’ve actually never been one to worship a specific label. Growing up, I always tried to stay away from the more popular labels and just buy things that were different in some way. That’s how I do my design as well. I try not to get influenced too much by what else is out there when I come out with my own designs.

DIYthing: If you were to describe your brand, what would you tell us about it?
Angela: I’d like to think that it’s fun, young and different.

DIYthing: You have received so many honors as a designer, which one is most meaningful?
Angela: I’d have to say it’s a toss up between the Rising Star award from the Fashion Group International and the Designer of the Year award from the Scottsdale Cultural Council. The FGI award is an honor to me because it is an international recognition from a very prestigious organization that I respect. The Designer of the Year award was also exciting to me because I am proud to be a resident of Scottsdale and to have them recognize me made me feel special.

DIYthing: I see you have www.pinkgray.com account. Tell us about what you like about PinkGray, is it a helpful site for indies?
Angela: I think it’s such a great resource for designers and buyers alike. It makes it easier for all of us to find out about each other online. As a small design line, it’s much easier than having to spend a ton of money and travel all over to attend all of the industry trade shows in order to promote my work. I wish that this became the norm for everyone and that the word would get out to all of the boutiques in the nation. I also like how affordable it is and how easy to use it is.

DIYthing: Do you use any other online communities to promote your work?
Angela: I sell through a lot of online stores, but Stars and Infinite Darkness and Unsung Designers seem to be the ones who get me the most orders. I’m so happy they both exist.
