Grand Re-opening of Annual Brooklyn Indie Market

The Brooklyn Indie Market is coming out in spring kickin’ - they will kick off their seasonal opening with an Indie Fest. That sounds like fun!
It is all happening on Saturday, May 3, 2008 from 11 am - 7 pm in Carroll Gardens, Brooklyn. BIM is one of our favorite markets in NYC. There’s always new artists and the collections are always fresh and hip.

Opening festivities include: unplugged indie musicians, temporary tattoo parlour for kids of all ages, face painting, kiddie artisan-craft workshops by Stars and Sprinkles and BIM’s designers, giveaways and meet-and greet with indie designers. FREE

So head on down to the corner of Smith and Union Street and look for the red and white striped tent

You will find some of your favorite indie artists at the weekly indie market: jewelry by Wabisabi-Brooklyn, hats by Rocks and Salt, kids wear by Wonder Threads, and frocks by Melissa Bell.

So get ready to shop and join BIM in this kickin’ celebration.

And remember BIM is open May-Aug, Saturdays, 11a-7p and Sep.-Dec. Saturday and Sundays, 11a-7p

If you are a vendor you can find details on how to apply to sell your goods at Brooklyn Indie Market.

Directions:
Subway: Take the F/G train to Carroll street. Exit at President street exit.
Car from NYC: From the Brooklyn Bridge turn RIGHT onto Atlantic Ave. Turn LEFT onto Court Street. Turn Left onto Smith Street

Poppytalk - online street market

poppy-talk.jpg

Promoting yourself as an indie designer can be tough sometimes but thanks to sites such as Poppytalk, a place that showcases designers, their wares and even an option to purchase the items pop up. Poppytalk charges $60.00 a month to house a virtual table.

Poppytalk handmade is a curated monthly online street market to showcase, buy and sell handmade goods of emerging design talent from around the world.

The site features a limited number of tables/pages (sellers), each seller has one image on the home page. Imagine a site with virtual tables holding images of special designers, for a one month period. Each Poppytalk Handmade Street Market is a month long allowing designers to showcase their wares in a more focused and quality platform and to increase awareness of their product more effectively. All items are tagged and categorized for the buyers to be able to find preferred items (e.g. papergoods, art, etc.).

A link from the image goes to the designer’s table (page) holding 9 items. Each page introduces the designer and why they were picked or what Poppytalk loves about them and each item has a description along with a link to their online store (be it Etsy, Mintd, Dawanda or personal online store/site). All monies exchanged is between the buyer and the seller much like a real street market). And just like a regular street market, there is a charge to rent a table (or in this case a page) which will cover administration and web hosting fees. Once an item sells, you are able to upload a new item at any time.

Poppytalk Handmade Market Schedule

March 10 - April 11, 2008 - Green Pop! An Eco-Minded and Green Market, (Submissions Deadline - Feb. 21/08)

Tami Curtis-Ellis jazzes it up at the Arts Market

Art by Tami Curtis-Ellis

Here is the work of another artist, Tami Curtis-Ellis, that I met at the Arts Market of New Orleans. I love how Tami uses vintage wooden frame windows and screens in many of her pieces. Not only is it eco-friendly, but the screens also connect you to a different time in our history. Many of the artists at the Arts Market were using found objects and recycled pieces in their works.

Tami has a rich history on the Louisiana art scene. You can read her profile at the NOLA Fun Guide. Stay tuned, we hope to bring you more about Tami and her colorful, jazzy style soon.

Wishing you peace and joy for this special holiday season. Heather Mattingly ’s work is so peaceful and always brings me much hope - not only for New Orleans as it continues to rebuild, but for all who are experiencing rebuilding. You can see more of her work at Flickr photostream.

3rd Ward’s Handmade Holiday a success

Betsy Ply Yarn

3rd Ward held its first ever Handmade Holiday Craft Fair and Open House in Brooklyn today. Judging by the crowds, the market and Open House were a great success. The place was packed with indie artists and buyers looking for handmade gifts. We were able to speak to several indies about their work. Several mentioned that this was their first market experience. Visitors were treated to demos in vintage furniture restoration, sustainable lamp design, video animation, metal work, and graphic design. 3rd Ward Members and artists led the demos and tutorials. There was also music and refreshments.

If you weren’t able to make it, you can still see some of the designers’ work by checking out their web sites:

Handmade in New York Craft Fair

Joanna and Antoinette

I stopped by one of my favorite shops in the village today - The Ink Pad, and I discovered that they were sponsoring a craft fair - Handmade in New York Craft Fair. So I strolled over to Westbeth Community Center on Bethune. There was a variety of artists selling jewelry, scarves, and several booths had handmade cards and other paper arts. I met Joanna and Antoinette and discovered that they are from Louisiana. It is always great to meet folks from home. The Ink Pad also had several of their designers at the fair.

Some of the other Indie Artists and Designers included:

Shimoda Accessories Wonderful Unique Jewelry

Katherine Radcliffe Art - Beautiful Silk Scarves

Handcrafted by Joanne Nichols - Elegant Jewelry

Alice DePrisco Artwork and Murals

Stay tuned - we may be bringing you a feature soon on The Ink Pad!

Black Friday for Indies

Are you one of those die hard shoppers that must get out on the day after Thanksgiving to shop? Well, if you are in New York and you want to shop for unique gifts and fashion, you should start the day by checking out Underground NYC. It is an indoor market for small designers and artisans located in the middle of the fashion capital - 1 block from Bryant Park, 1031 Sixth Avenue and 39th. It is open from 11 am - 7 pm Tuesday through Friday.

Brooklyn Indie Market
And you can continue on your quest for handmade designer goods at the Brooklyn Indie Market . As always it offers a regular sampling of indie designers with fresh new designs. Check out DIYthing’s story on BIM that we did a few weeks ago. BIM is located in Cobble Hill, a popular Brooklyn shopping scene. You will see the market on the corner of Smith and Union Streets.

So shop away, just remember to buy handmade and think of sustainability this holiday season.
