Happy Mother’s Day! The joys of being a mom - I have 2 myself that are not so small anymore (15 and 16) and one on the way!

Have you ever thought about recycling daddy’s shirt into a dress for your little girl? The photo above is just that - luvlug on Etsy does just that. She recycles old men’s button downs into little dresses.

The pocket on the front of the shirt has been repositioned on the left hip of the dress for your little Busy One to fill with all sorts of little goodies.

DIY City Mag next issue

Wendy and I are hard at work on the next issue of DIY City Mag. We will feature New Orleans as our next city. It has been so much fun meeting and interviewing artists from the city. We have also been busy going to the many festivals and fairs in the city. And soon we will be going to Jazz Fest. We think you will really love the second issue. We hope to publish it in June. So stay tuned. In the meantime you can meet new artists from all over at our DIY City Blog and our DIY City Community. Also, we are posting weekly on Stylehive so keep a look out there for our fun finds. This week we are showcasing designers who bring you great designs for Earth Day.

Brooklyn Flea April 13th

Well if you haven’t heard - Brooklyn Flea is in high gear - the first weekend was a huge success. Every Sunday from 10am to 5pm—rain or shine you can gather with your best buds and check it out at Bishop Loughlin Memorial High School in Fort Greene, Brooklyn, on Lafayette Ave. between Clermont and Vanderbilt Ave. You can expect to see about 200 vendors selling vintage furniture, clothing and antiques plus what we find neat - local makers. There’s even a slideshow of last week’s event. With all of these vendors, you will find great items to upcycle for your green projects.

Keen Footwear’s STAND Contest Winner - Spencer Brown

Spencer Brown of Costa Mesa, CA is the $25K Grand Prize Winner in Keen Footwear’s STAND Contest. His Rent-a-Green Box.com is a really neat company. His idea is to create a “zero-waste” pack and move solution. He saw that there was a real eco problem with the way we produce and dispose of packing boxes for moving. So he created a way to recycle plastic trash to make a rentable and reusable stacking packing boxes.

Check out his video describing how he started this eco-friendly business. What a great contest rewarding creatives who are committed to sustainability.

Grand Re-opening of Annual Brooklyn Indie Market

The Brooklyn Indie Market is coming out in spring kickin’ - they will kick off their seasonal opening with an Indie Fest. That sounds like fun!
It is all happening on Saturday, May 3, 2008 from 11 am - 7 pm in Carroll Gardens, Brooklyn. BIM is one of our favorite markets in NYC. There’s always new artists and the collections are always fresh and hip.

Opening festivities include: unplugged indie musicians, temporary tattoo parlour for kids of all ages, face painting, kiddie artisan-craft workshops by Stars and Sprinkles and BIM’s designers, giveaways and meet-and greet with indie designers. FREE

So head on down to the corner of Smith and Union Street and look for the red and white striped tent

You will find some of your favorite indie artists at the weekly indie market: jewelry by Wabisabi-Brooklyn, hats by Rocks and Salt, kids wear by Wonder Threads, and frocks by Melissa Bell.

So get ready to shop and join BIM in this kickin’ celebration.

And remember BIM is open May-Aug, Saturdays, 11a-7p and Sep.-Dec. Saturday and Sundays, 11a-7p

Vida’s Market - new NYC indie market for the little ones

Have you heard about Vida’s Market ? It is to be the first market in New York featuring handcrafted items for children, babies and expectant parents.

Up-and-coming designers will have a chance to sell their work on Saturday, May 31, 2008 from 10 AM – 7 PM at Wallace Hall in Saint Ignatius Loyola Church at 980 Park Ave. (between 83 and 84th Streets) in New York City. CRAFT CON 2008 time to apply

CRAFT CON 2008 will be in San Francisco in just a few short weeks - April 4-6, 2008. The applications are now live! It will be held in Brava Theatre in the historic Mission District. If you are new to Craft Con, it was born in 2007 as Craft Congress in Pittsburgh. The launch event was very successful with over fifty indie craft show organizers from across the US, Canada, as well as the UK. This event seems to be a great way for indies to share their experiences with others in regards to business development for the craft community. So if you can make it, you should hurry and register - there are 250 seats available for this year’s event.
